In March 2013 I was elected to the first ever fully elected Youth Parliament in Northern Ireland, with over 60% of the vote. I will now sit on the UK Youth Parliament, an organisation dedicated to giving the young people a voice and empowering change at local, national and international levels.
In my new role as MYP, I will do everything I can to ensure young people are represented in a comprehensive and respectable way, on the issues that matter to THEM. While MYPs do not gain any legislative powers, we can execute change through our close relationships with the politicians, as well as by working with pressure groups, charities and outside organisations.
The ticket I ran for election on focused on a few key areas: Improving the fairness and quality of public transport for young people, gaining better support and provisions for sufferers of suicide, depression and self-harming – and a wider look at teenage mental health. My final issue is to improve the conversation between young people and their elected representatives, I am to repair the breakdown in communications that has occurred. I am also campaigning on other issues including introducing more coding and software development into schools, work with the LGBTQ community, supporting marriage equality, and support Amnesty on their campaigns where possible.
As well as this, I will also aid and assist the wider UKYP on their national scale campaigns, which this year is focused on providing ‘A Curriculum For Life’ – aimed at equipping student with all the skills they need to work and live well in the UK.
If that all sounds like a lot – rest assured I still have plenty of time to devote to my other duties – Senior Adviser to Shimna Student Council, Head of PR and Marketing at Mourne Youth Council. Incidentally I am also Chairman of my school’s Formal Committee. I also find time to enjoy karate, and still retain some form of a social life!
